Description

Shibasaki et al used ultrasonographic measurements of subglottic tracheal diameter to select the size of an endotracheal tube for a child. They also reported equations based on age and height. The authors are from Kyoto Prefectural University and the Cleveland Clinic.

Patient selection: child from 1 month to 6 years old

Measurements:

(1) ultrasonographic measurement of the subglottic tracheal diameter in mm

(2) age in months

(3) height in centimeters

Type of Tube

External OD in mm

uncuffed

(0.55 * (subglottic diameter)) + 1.16

cuffed

(0.46 * (subglottic diameter)) + 1.56

uncuffed

(0.030 * (age in months)) + 5.4

cuffed

(0.027 * (age in months)) + 5.2

uncuffed

(0.044 * (height in cm)) + 2.6

cuffed

(0.037 * (height in cm)) + 2.9

Performance:

• The subglottic equations showed the best correlation with the optimum tube selection.
