Description

Poh et al developed equations for predicting the six-minute walking distance (6MWD) in adults. The authors are from Curtis University of Technology, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Asthma and Allergy Research Institute in Perth and The Heart Institute in Singapore.

Patient selection: healthy Singaporean adult from 45 to 85 years

Testing corridor: 45 meter

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) height in centimeters

(3) weight in kilograms

(4) peak heart rate in beats per minute

(5) percent of predicted heart rate based on age

predicted maximum heart rate =

= 220 - (age in years)

percent of predicted maximum heart rate =

= (heart rate observed) / (predicted maximum)

predicted 6MWD in meters =

= (6.94 * (height)) - (3.51 * (weight)) - (4.49 * (age in years)) + (5.50 * (percent predicted HR max)) - 473.27
