Description

Paxton et al developed 2 equations for predicting changes in fat mass during pregnancy. The authors are from Columbia University and St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City.

Patient selection: pregnant woman from 14 to 37 weeks of pregnancy

Subjects: 100 women of mixed races (black, Hispanic, white)

Parameters:

(1) prepregnancy weight in kilograms

(2) current weight in kilograms

(3) prepregnancy right thigh skinfold thickness in mm

(4) current right thigh skinfold thickness in mm

fat change in kilograms =

= (0.77 * ((current weight) – (prepregnancy weight))) + (0.07 * ((current skinfold) – (prepregnancy skinfold))) – 6.13

fat change in kilograms =

= (0.84 * ((current weight) – (prepregnancy weight))) – 6.49

Performance:

• The R^2 value with skinfold thickness was 0.73 and without 0.71.
