Description

Ngai et al developed equations for predicting the six minute walking distance (6MWD) in Chinese adults. The authors are from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Griffith University, Curtin University, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and the University of Western Australia.

Patient selection: Chinese adult, age 55 to 85 years

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) gender (0 if female, 1 if male)

(3) peak heart rate in beats per minute

(4) predicted maximum heart rate in beats per minute

predicted maximum heart rate =

= 220 - (age in years)

heart rate as percent of predicted maximum heart rate =

= (peak heart rate) / (predicted maximum heart rate)

predicted distance in meters =

= (-5.77 * (age)) + (44.71 * (points for gender)) + 941.77

predicted distance in meters =

= (-5.11 * (age)) + (41.31 * (points for gender)) + (2.19 * (percent of predicted maximum heart rate)) + 722.35

where:

• The points for gender in the second equation was 41.31 in Table 3 and -41.31 on page 60.
