Description

Lee et al reported equations for the surface area of the hand in Korean adults. The authors are from the University of Minnesota and Seoul National University.

Lines of the hand with the fingers extended:

(1) horizontal along the proximal edge of the hand

(2) perpendicular to line 1 to the tip of the middle finger

(3) perpendicular to line 2 through the distal base of the thumb

Parameters:

(1) hand length in cm (from wrist circumference to the tip of the middle finger along line 2)

(2) hand circumference in cm (metacarpal-phalangeal joint circumference at line 3)

hand surface area in square cm =

= 1.219 * (hand length) * (hand circumference)

hand surface area in square cm =

= 22.348 * (hand length in cm)

The authors also used the equation for total body surface area but found that it was not as valid as the other equations.

hand surface area in square cm =

= 1.765 * ((height in cm)^0.725) * ((weight in kg)^0.425)
