Description

Lazzer et al reported equations for estimating the resting energy expenditure (REE) of obese Italian males. The authors are from the Italian Institute for Auxology, IRCCS, in Milan.


Patient selection: adult Italian male, 20 to 65 years of age, severely obese

 

Parameters:

(1) body weight in kilograms

(2) fat-free mass (FFM) in kilograms

(3) fat mass (FM) in kilograms

(4) height in meters

(5) age in years

 

fat mass =

= (body weight) - (FFM)

 

resting energy expenditure in megaJoules per day =

= (0.048 * (weight in kilograms)) + (4.655 * (height in meters)) - (0.020 * (age)) - 3.605

 

resting energy expenditure in megaJoules per day =

= (0.081 * (FFM in kilograms)) + (0.049 * (FM in kilograms)) - (0.019 * (age)) - 2.194

 

The second equation gives a lower than expected value. The comparable equation for obese females has the constant added, not subtracted. The rewritten equation would be

 

resting energy expenditure in megaJoules per day =

= (0.081 * (FFM in kilograms)) + (0.049 * (FM in kilograms)) - (0.019 * (age)) + 2.194
