Description

Lazzer et al developed equations for estimating the basal metabolic rate (BMR) for obese children and adolescents. The authors are from the University of Udine and Instituto Auxologico Italiano in Italy

Patient selection: obese Caucasian children and adolescents from 7 to 18 years of age

Paramters:

(1) gender (female 0, male 1)

(2) body weight in kilograms

(3) height in meters

(4) Tanner pubertal stage (from 1 to 5)

(5) fat-free mass in kilograms

(6) fat mass in kilograms

BMR in MJ/day =

= (0.044 * (body weight)) + (2.836 * (height)) – (0.148 * (Tanner stage)) + (0.781 * (points for gender)) – 0.551

BMR in MJ/day =

= (0.082 * (fat free mass)) + (0.037 * (fat mass)) – (0.125 * (Tanner stage)) + (0.706 * (points for gender)) + 2.528

Performance:

• Both equations have an adjusted R-squared of about 0.70.

• The root mean squared error (RMSE) for the first equation is 0.954 and for the second 0.943.
