Description

Korth et al reported several equations for estimating the resting energy expenditure (REE) of adults. The authors are from Christian-Albrechts University and Universitatsklinikum Schleswig Holstein in Kiel.

Patient selection: adults, young and middle-aged

Output: REE in kiloJoules per day

Parameters:

(1) body weight in kilograms

(2) age in years

(3) gender

(4) height in centimeters

(5) fat-free mass (FFM) by 4-compartment model

(6) fat-free mass (FFM) by skinfold thickness

(7) fat-free mass (FFM) by biolelectric impedance analysis (BIA)

(8) fat-free mass (FFM) by DXA scan

(9) fat-free mass (FFM) by air displacement plethysmography (ADP)

(10) fat-free mass (FFM) by deuterium oxide dilution

REE in kJ per day =

= (65.5 * (body weight)) + 2284

= (41.5 * (body weight)) - (19.1 * (age)) + (35 * (height)) + (1107.4 * (points for gender)) - 1731.2

= (106.8 * (FFM by 4-compartment)) + 1322

= (100.3 * (FFM by skinfold)) + 1645

= (105.8 * (FFM by BIA)) + 1420

= (105.1 * (FFM by DXA)) + 1422

= (108.1 * (FFM by ADP)) + 1231

= (107.1 * (FFM by deuterium oxide dilution)) + 1286
