Description

Kim et al developed equations for predicting skeletal muscle mass in pediatric patients based on a dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) measurement of appendicular lean soft tissue. The authors are from St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital and Columbia University.

Subjects: healthy pediatric patients with Tanner stage 4 or before (for Tanner stage 5 the equations in 02.19.18 are applicable).

Methods: DEXA scans

Parameters:

(1) appendicular lean soft tissue in kilograms

(2) weight in kilograms

total skeletal muscle mass in kilograms =

= (1.19 * (appendicular lean soft tissue kg)) - 1.135

total skeletal muscle mass in kilograms =

= (1.003 * (appendicular lean soft tissue kg)) + (0.039 * (weight)) - 1.315

Performance:

• For both equations the R-square is about 0.98 and SEE 0.5 kg.

• The patient's race did not impact the accuracy of the equation.

• The models may overpredict skeletal muscle in some patients with anorexia nervosa.
