Description

Kasarskis et al reported equations for estimating the total daily energy expenditures of a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).  The authors are from the University of Kentucky, Lexington VA Medical Center, University of Vermont, Columbia University, Pennsylvania State University and the University of Utah.


Patient selection: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

 

Parameters:

(1) sex

(2) weight in kilograms

(3) age in years

(4) height in cm

(5) ALSFRS-6 score (based on 6 items from the ALSFRS, with scores from 24 to 0)

(6) lower extremity MMT score (manual muscle test in lower extremities)

= (Harris Benedict RMR in kcal) + (55.96 * (ALSFRS-6 score)) - 168

= 66 + (13.7 * (weight)) + (5 * (height)) - (6.76 * (age)) + (55.96 * (ALSFRS-6)) - 168

= (Harris Benedict RMR in kcal) + (55.96 * (ALSFRS-6 score)) - 168

= 655 + (9.6 * (weight)) + (1.8 * (height)) - (4.7 * (age)) + (55.96 * (ALSFRS-6)) - 168
