Description

Going et al reported equations for estimating fat-free mass (FFM) and percent body fat in adolescent girls. The authors are from the University of Arizona, San Diego State University, University of New Orleans, University of North Carolina and Louisiana State University.

Patient selection: adolescent females

Parameters:

(1) height in meters

(2) weight in kilograms

(3) reistance in ohms

(4) resistance index (RI, height squared divided by resistance) in cm^2 per ohm

(5) race (Black, Hispanic, White)

(6) age in years

body mass index =

= (kilograms) / ((weight) ^ 2)

resistance index =

= ((height in cm)^2) / (resistance on Ohms)

fat-free mass in kilograms =

= (0.15 * (weight in kilograms)) + (0.81 * (age in years)) + (1.59 * (point for race)) + (0.52 * (resistance index)) - 2.43

where:

• Point for race is 1 if Black and 0 if Hispanic or White.

percent body fat =

= (-0.0739 * ((BMI)^2)) + (5.9358 * (BMI)) + (0.0481 * (resistance)) - (2.6452 * (points for race)) - 94.048
