Description

Gallagher et al developed equations for percent body fat based on the body mass index (BMI). The percent body fat varies with age, race, sex and BMI. The authors are from St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, Columbia University, MRC Human Nutrition Research (Cambridge), Kashiwa Hospital, and Jikei University (Chiba).

Parameters:

(1) body mass index

(2) sex (1 if male, 0 if female)

(3) age in years

(4) race (1 if Asian, 0 if not)

percent body fat =

= 76 - (1097.8 / (BMI)) - (20.6 * (points for sex)) + (0.053 * (age)) + (95 * (points for race) / (BMI)) - (0.044 * (points for race) * (age)) + (154 * (points for sex) / (BMI)) + (0.034 * (points for sex) * (age))

percent body fat =

= 64.5 - (848 / (BMI)) + (0.079 * (age)) - (16.4 * (points for sex)) + (0.05 * (points for sex) * (age)) + (39 * (points for sex) / (BMI))
