Friis-Hansen reported equations for predicting total body water (TBW) in a child based on weight with or without height.
Patient selection: up until puberty (after puberty there is digression between the genders with the male having a significantly greater total body water.
Parameters:
(1) weight in kilograms
(2) height in cm
total body water in liters =
= 0.135 * ((weight)^0.666) * ((height)^0.535)
total body water in liters =
= 0.843 * ((weight)^0.891)
where:
• The equations are similar to those reported b Morgenstern et al. (see above).
Performance:
• The standard deviation for the first equation was 8.7%.
• The standard deviation for the second equation was 9.2%.
