Description

Davidson et al developed equations for predicting percent body fat based on race, skinfold thickness and other patient data (see previous section). The authors also listed equations for estimating body fat based on the sum of 4 skinfold thickness measurements. The authors are from St.Luke's Roosevelt Hospital and Columbia University in New York City.

Reference method: DEXA scan

Patient selection: adults >= 18 years of age (up to 110)

Parameters (see Figure 2, page 546):

(1) gender

(2) biceps skinfold measurements in millimeters

(3) triceps skinfold measurements in millimeters

(4) subscapular skinfold measurements in millimeters

(5) suprailiac skinfold measurements in millimeters

total skinfold thickness in mm =

= SUM(4 skinfolds)

percent body fat in a female =

= (35.884 * LOG10(sum of the 4 skinfold thicknesses)) - 33.709

percent body fat in a male =

= (30.729 * LOG10(sum of the 4 skinfold thicknesses)) - 31.122
