Description

Canda et al reported 24 equations for estimating the height of young Spanish adult women using various combinations of the lengths for various body segments. These can be helpful in situations when certain body segments are missing or deformed. The authors are from the Sports Medical Centre in Spain.

Patient selection: Spanish female athletes > 18 years old

The authors generated 24 equations combining various combinations of:

(1) arm span

(2) sitting height

(3) thigh length

(4) lower leg length

(5) upper arm length

(6) foot length

(7) forearm length

(8) hand length

most accurate height estimate in cm =

= (0.159 * (arm span in cm)) + (0.957 * (sitting height in cm)) + (0.424 * (thigh length)) + (0.966 * (lower leg length)) + 1.772

where:

• Addition of sitting height, thigh length and lower leg length would seem to be total body height based on sum of segments.

• The range for estimates was 1.96 * 1.57 cm = 3.08 cm

height estimate in cm =

= (0.212 * (arm span in cm)) + 0.975 * (sitting height in cm)) + (1.173 * (lower leg length in cm)) + 1.815

height estimate in cm =

= (0.509 * (arm span in cm)) + (0.966 * (sitting heigth in cm)) - 4.102

height estimate in cm =

= (1.246 * (sitting height in cm)) + (1.306 * (thigh length)) + 0.685

height estimate in cm =

= (1.399 * (lower leg length in cm)) + (1.526 * (foot length in cm)) + (0.776 * (thigh length in cm)) + 45.104

height estimate in cm =

= (2.077 * (upper arm length in cm)) + (1.154* (thigh length in cm)) + 52.044

height estimate in cm =

= (1.870 * (upper arm length in cm)) + (1.63 * (forearm length in cm)) + (1.278 * (hand length in cm)) + 46.344

height estimate in cm =

= (2.105 * (upper arm length in cm)) + (1.966 * (forearm length in cm)) + 53.97

Limitations:

• The measurements must be taken accurately.

• R-squared for the first equation was 0.96. R-squared for the last was 0.77.
