Brook et al used 4 skinfold measurements to estimate body density in prepubescent children. The author is from the Institute of Child Health in London.
Age of subjects: 1 to 11 years
Skinfold measurements were taken in mm at:
(1) triceps
(2) biceps
(3) subscapular
(4) suprailiac
sum of the skinfold thicknesses =
= SUM(measurement of all 4 sites)
The equations for determining the body density are based on those of Durnin and Rahaman for adolescents (see 02.03.05).
body density in kg/L for boys =
= 1.1690 - (0.0788 * LOG10(sum of the skinfold thicknesses))
body density in kg/L for girls =
= 1.2063 - (0.0999 * LOG10(sum of the skinfold thicknesses))
Limitations:
• This method required precise measurements at each site.
• The study is based on 12 boys and 11 girls, presumably Caucasian.
