Equations of Bernstein et al for Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) in Obese Patients Based on Height, Weight and Body Surface Area

Bernstein et al developed several models for predicting the resting metabolic rate (RMR) for obese patients. One is based on common measurements. The authors are from St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, Columbia University and Mt. Sinai Medical School in New York City.

Patient selection: obese adults

Parameters:

(1) height in cm

(2) weight in kilograms

(3) age in years

RMR for male in kcal per day =

= (11.02 * (weight)) + (10.23 * ((height)) – (5.8 * (age)) – 1032 (+/- 1086)

= (1372 * (BSA)) + (6.2 * (age)) – 1079 (+/- 380)

RMR for female in kcal per day =

= (7.48 * (weight)) - (0.42 * ((height)) – (3 * (age)) + 844 (+/- 429)

= (758 * (BSA)) - (2.3 * (age)) – 53 (+/- 168)
