Description

Abe et al used magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate skeletal muscle mass in young, health Japanese adults. They developed a number of equations for describing its regional distribution. The authors are from Tokyo Metropolitan University, Schering-Plough Research Institute (Kenilworth, New Jersey) and Waseda University (Saitama, Japan).

total skeletal muscle mass in kilograms in young Japanese males =

= (0.51 * (fat free mass in kg)) - 5.7

total skeletal muscle mass in kilograms in young Japanese females =

= (0.55 * (fat free mass in kg)) - 9.0

skeletal muscle in the trunk in kilograms =

= (0.48 * (total skeletal muscle mass)) - 1.0

skeletal muscle in the upper legs in kilograms =

= (0.33 * (total skeletal muscle mass)) + 0.5

skeletal muscle in the lower legs in kilograms =

= (0.07 * (total skeletal muscle mass)) + 0.8

skeletal muscle in the arms in kilograms =

= (0.11 * (total skeletal muscle mass)) - 0.3

The sum of the 4 regional muscle masses is about 100% of the total muscle mass.
