Description

Yu et al reported several equations for predicting the standard liver volume for Koreans. The study also included a figure demonstrating the change in liver volume based on body surface area (BSA). The authors are from Chonbuk National University, Pohang University of Science and Technology, National Institute of Scientific Investigation in Daejeon and the University of Miami in Florida.

Patient selection: Korean

In Figure 2 (page 781) there is a plot of liver volume in mL (y-axis) and body surface area in square meters (x-axis). This shows:

(1) a non-linear curve

(2) somewhat linear relation below 1.25 square meters BSA with little dispersion about the mean

(3) a more curved relation above 1.25 square meters BSA with a wide dispersion about the mean

The mean line can be approximated as:

liver volume in mL =

= (267.9 * ((BSA)^2)) + (252.5 * (BSA)) + 231.2

Dispersion around the line above 1.25 square meters appears to be in the order of +/- 40%.
