Description

Wicks et al used the heart rate index (HR index) to estimate the MET (metabolic equivalent of task) associated with an activity. The authors are from Robina Hospital in Queensland. the University of Queensland, the University of Wisconsin and Aurora Sinai/Aurora St. Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee.

NOTE: Lee et al used HR index (referred to as the heart rate ratio) to predict METs for various activities performed by paraplegic patients (above).

Parameters:

(1) heart rate at rest

(2) heart rate during the activity

(3) MET = metabolic equivalent for the activity

heart rate index =

= (heart rate during the activity) / (heart rate at rest)

estimated MET for the activity =

= (6 * (heart rate index)) - 5
