Waugh developed an equation for estimating the amount of water is present in a volume of serum. The author is from the University of Kentucky.
Parameters:
(1) total lipid concentration in grams per dL (not mg)
(2) total protein concentration in grams per dL
mL of water in 100 mL serum =
= 99.1 - (1.03 * (total lipid concentration in g/dL)) - (0.73 * (total protein concentration in g/dL))
Since 1 mL of water is approximately 1 gram:
percent water as weight per volume =
= (mL of water in 100 mL serum) / (100 mL) * 100% =
= (mL of water in 100 mL serum)
