Wang et al developed an equation for estimating body cell mass (BCM). The authors are from St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital, Columbia University, and Brookhaven National Laboratory.
Parameters:
(1) total body water in kilograms, from dilution with water made of deuterium or tritium
(2) total body nitrogen in kilograms, from prompt gamma in vivo neutron activation (IVNA)
(3) extracellular water in kilograms, from sodium bromide dilution
(4) bone mineral mass in kilograms. from DEXA scan
body cell mass in kilograms =
= (1.0129 * (total body water)) + (6.525 * (total body nitrogen)) - (1.02 * (extracellular water)) - (0.732 * (bone mineral mass))
