Description

Vermeiren et al reported an equation to estimate appendicular lean mass in an adult >= 80 years of age. This can help to identify an older adult with sarcopenia. The authors are from Vrije University in Brussels.

Patient selection: Belgians >= 80 years of age

Parameters:

(1) height in centimeters

(2) resistance by BIA in Ohms at 50 kHz

(3) sex (female =0, male = 1)

(4) body weight in kilograms

impedance index =

= ((height)^2) / (resistance)

appendicular lean mass in kilograms =

= (0.19 * (impedance index)) + (2.101 * (points for sex)) + (0.079 * (weight)) + 0.827

appendicular lean mass index = ALMI =

= (appendicular lean mass) / ((height in meters)^2)

Criteria for sarcopenia (Delmonico)

Sex

ALMI in kg per sq m

male

< 7.25
