Description

Sergi et al developed an equation for estimating the appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM) of an adult. The authors are from University of Padova in Italy

Appendicular skeletal muscle is that in the limbs. It comprises > 75% of total skeletal muscle mass.

Patient selection: Caucasian adults, age > 60 years

Parameters:

(1) height in centimeters

(2) weight in kilograms

(3) resistance in Ohms at 50 Hz

(4) reactance in Ohms at 50 Hz

(5) sex (male 1, female 0)

resistive index =

= ((height in cm)^2) / (resistance in Ohms)

skeletal muscle mass in kilograms =

= (0.227 * (resistive index)) + (0.095 * (weight)) + (0.064 * (reactance)) + (1.384 * (points for sex)) - 3.964
