Schutte et al estimated the total body water based on the plasma creatinine level. The authors are from the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas.
total plasma creatinine in mg =
= (plasma volume in deciliters) * (plasma creatinine in mg/dL)
total body water in liters =
= (0.754 * (total plasma creatinine in mg)) + 19.869
Limitations:
• A patient with renal insufficiency has an elevated plasma creatinine unrelated to the total body water.
