Prassopoulos et al reported an equation for calculating the volume of the spleen in adults. The authors are from the University of Crete.
Population: Greek adults
Imaging studies: CT or MRI
Parameters:
(1) width in cm in any transverse section
(2) length in cm
(3) thickness at the hilum in cm. perpendicular to other axes
volume of the spleen in mL =
= (0.58 * (width) * (length) * (thickness)) + 30
The overall mean weight was 214-215 mL with range from 107 to 342.
The density of the spleen is 1.05 g/mL.
The volume of the spleen on imaging studies may be larger than that seen in the excised specimen.
