Purpose: To determine the daily dose of levothyroxine required by a patient following total thyroidectomy using the equation of Ojomo et al.

Description

Ojomo et al developed an equation for determining the daily levothyroxine dose for a patient following total thyroidectomy. This is based on the body mass index (BMI) rather than total body weight. The authors are from the University of Wisconsin and Northshore University Healthcare System in Evanston.


Patient selection: thyroidectomy for benign disease

 

Outcome: euthyroid status

= 2.13 - (0.018 * (BMI in kg per square meter))

 

daily dose of levothyroxine in micrograms =

= (daily dose in micrograms per kg) * (body weight in kilograms)
