Mercuriali and Inghilleri reported an algorithm to help to choose the best transfusion strategy for an orthopedic patient. The authors are from Gaetano Pini Orthopedic Institute in Milan.


Parameters:

(1) estimated blood volume in mL by the equation of Nadler et al

(2) hematocrit preoperative

(3) hematocrit on postoperative day 5

(4) volume of transfused blood in mL

 

estimated blood loss in mL =

= (blood volume) * ((hematocrit preop) - (hematocrit postop day 5)) + (volume transfused blood)
