Description

Macdonald et al used bioelectrical impedance analysis to (BIA) estimate skeletal muscle mass. The authors are from the University of Wales-Bangor and St Helier Hospital in Wales and England.

Patient selection: adult on dialysis with mean age 65 years

Parameters:

(1) height in cm

(2) resistance at 50 kHz in ohms

(3) reactance at 50 kHz in ohms

(4) gender (male 0, female 1)

(5) age in years

muscle mass in kilograms =

= (0.292 * ((height)^2) / (resistance)) + (0.06983 * (reactance)) + (0.08553 * (height)) - (2.092 * (points for gender)) - (0.05 * (age)) - 11.626
