Description

Liu et al reported equations based on data from biolectric impedance analysis (BIA) to evaluate the body composition of pediatric patients in Asia. The authors are from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Queensland University, American University ofBeirut, Food and Nutrition Research Institute at Manila, Mahidol University, University Kebangsaan Malaysia and Kagawa Nutrition University.

Patient selection: Asian children from 8 to 10 years of age

Method of analysis: bioelectric impedance analysis (BIA)

Parameters:

(1) height in centimeters

(2) resistance in Ohms

(3) weight in kilograms

(4) age in years

(5) sex

estimate of fat-free mass in kilograms =

= (0.299 * ((height)^2) / (resistance)) + (0.086 * (height)) + (0.245 * (weight)) + (0.26 * (age)) + (0.901 * (points for sex)) - (0.415 * (points for ethnicity)) - 6.952

where:

• The resistance index (RI) = ((height)^2) / (resistance).
