Description

Kyle et al developed an equation for estimating the appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASMM) of an adult. The authors are from Geneva University Hospital in Switzerland.

Appendicular skeletal muscle is that in the limbs. It comprises > 75% of total skeletal muscle mass.

Patient selection: Australian adults

Parameters:

(1) height in centimeters

(2) weight in kilograms

(3) resistance in Ohms at 50 Hz

(4) reactance in Ohms at 50 Hz

(5) sex (male 1, female 0)

(6) age in years

skeletal muscle mass in kilograms =

= (0.267 * ((height)^2) / (resistance)) + (0.095 * (weight)) - (0.012 * (age)) + (0.058 * (reactance)) + (1.909 * (points for sex)) - 4.211
