Kourkoumelis et al reported an equation for total body water in a pediatric patient. The authors are from multiple institutions in Europe and Australia.
Patient selection: age from 7 to 15 years
Analysis: deuterium dilution technique, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA)
Parameters:
(1) height in centimeters
(2) resistance in ohms at 50 kHz
(3) weight in kilograms
(4) sex (0 female, 1 male)
total body water in kilograms =
= (0.44 * ((cm)^2) / (resistance)) + (0.12 * (weight)) * (0.33 * (points for sex)) + 1.5
where:
• 1 kilogram of water is approximately 1 liter.
