Description

Johnstone et al reported an equation for estimating an adult's basal metabolic rate (BMR). The authors are from Rowett Research Institute and University of Aberdeen in Scotland.

Patient selection: Scottish Caucasian adults with BMI from 16.7 to 49.3 kg per square m

Parameters:

(1) fat-free mass (FFM) in kilograms

(2) fat mass (FM) in kilograms

(3) age in years

fat mass =

= (body weight) - (fat-free mass)

BMR in kiloJoules per day =

= (90.2 * (FFM)) + (31.6 * (FM)) - (12.2 * (age)) + 1613

If the equation for fat mass is substituted:

BMR in kiloJoules per day =

= (58.6 * (FFM)) + (31.6 * (body weight)) - (12.2 * (age)) + 1613
