Description

Janmahasatian et al developed equations for estimating a patient's fat-free mass (FFM). The authors are from the University of Queensland (Brisbane), Queensland University of Technology and the University of California in San Francisco.

NOTE: The authors describe an equation for fat-free mass and use it as an estimate of lean body weight. Lean body weight is associated with a small percent of body fat, not a zero percent.

Patient selection: adults 18 to 82 years of age

Parameters:

(1) body weight in kilograms

(2) gender

(3) hip circumference in cm

(4) waist circumference in cm

fat free mass in kilograms =

= (1.59 * (body weight)) - (0.087 * (hip circumference) * (gender factor)) - (0.003 * (hip circumference) * (waist circumference)) - (0.004 * ((body weight)^2)) - 16.2
