Izumida et al reported an equation for predicting the ideal heart rate for a patient with systolic heart failure. This can help to guide therapy with ivabradine or other medication. The authors are from the University of Toyama in Japan.
Evaluation: transthoracic Doppler echocardiography
Analysis: detect the overlap between E and A waves in the pulse wave of transmitral flow
Parameters:
(1) heart rate in beats per minute
(2) deceleration time in milliseconds of the E wave
estimated overlap length in milliseconds =
= (6.2 * (heart rate)) + (0.81 * (deceleration time)) - 589
The ideal heart rate occurs when the overlap length is 0.
The rearranged equation is:
ideal heart rate =
= 93 - (0.13 * (deceleration time))
