Description

Heymsfield et al reported an equation for estimating total body fat using a multicompartment model. The authors are from St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital and The Flinders University of South Australia.

Patient selections: adolescents and adults, male and female, Black and White

Parameters:

(1) body density from hydrostatic weighing

(2) total body water in liters by deuterium dilution

(3) total body bone mineral content (BMC) in kilograms from DXA (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry)

(4) body weight in kilograms

body volume in liters =

= (body weight) / (body density)

total body fat in kilograms =

= (2.513 * (body volume)) - (0.739 * (total body water)) + (0.947 * (bone mineral content)) - (1.79 * (body weight))
