Gross et al reported an equation for estimating blood loss associated with surgery.
Parameters:
(1) estimated blood volume in mL
(2) hematocrit preoperative
(3) minimal allowable hematocrit
average hematocrit =
= ((preoperative hematocrit) + (minimal hematocrit)) / 2
allowable blood loss in mL =
= (blood volume) * ((hematocrit preop) - (minimal allowable hematocrit)) / (average hematocrit)

• The authors used the method quoted on page 146 of Moore's Metabolic Care of the Surgical Patient (1959). The Nadler equation is used in the implementation.
