Dubois and Dubois reported an equation for estimating the surface area of a hand.
Lines of the hand with the fingers extended:
(1) horizontal along the distal edge of the radius
(2) perpendicular to line 1 to the tip of the second finger
(3) perpendicular to line 2 through the distal base of the thumb
Parameters:
(1) hand length in cm (from wrist to the tip of the second finger along line 2)
(2) hand circumference in cm (metacarpal-phalangeal joint circumference at line 3)
hand surface area in square cm =
= 2.22 * (hand length) * (hand circumference)
NOTE: The result appears to be about twice other estimates. This may mean that the surface area value is for both hands.
