Description

Cruz et al reported an equation to estimate the preoperative hemoglobin that should be attained during prehabilitation to ensure that the postoperative hemoglobin will meet a desired threshold. This method makes several assumptions about what will happen at future surgery and so is an approximation. The authors are from Johns Hopkins University, Duke University, and Massachusetts General Hospital.

Patient selection: adult undergoing elective surgery

Parameters:

(1) postoperative hemoglobin threshold in g/dL (level that needs to be met or exceeded)

(2) allowable blood loss in mL

(3) estimated blood volume in mL (65 mL/kg for females; 70 mL/kg for males)

target preoperative hemoglobin in g/dL =

= (postoperative hemoglobin threshold) * A / B

A =

= ((allowable blood loss) / (2 * (estimated blood volume))) + 1

B =

= 1 - ((allowable blood loss) / (2 * (estimated blood volume)))
