Description

Casanova et al developed equations for predicting the six minute walking distance (6MWD) in healthy adults. The authors are from multiple universities in Spain, the United States and South America participating in the Six Minute Walk Distance Project.

Patient selection: healthy adults from 40 to 80 years of age, from 7 countries

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) gender (1 if female, 0 if male)

(3) weight in kilograms

(4) height in centimeters

(5) maximum heart rate as percent of predicted maximum

predicted maximum heart rate in beats per minute =

= 220 - (age in years)

maximum heart rate as percent of maximum =

= (maximum heart rate) / (predicted maximum) * 100%

predicted distance in meters =

= (2 * (height in cm)) - (1.5 * (weight)) - (4 * (age)) - (30 * (points for gender)) + (3 * (percent of maximum predicted)) + 361
