Burmeister estimated total body water from body weight, total body potassium content and body surface area. The author is from the University of Saarland and Children's Hospital in Homburg-Saar.

(1) total body potassium content in mEq

(2) body surface area in square meters (Dubois and Dubois)

(3) body weight in kilograms

total body water in liters =

= (0.0072 * (total body potassium)) + (6.04 * (body surface area))

• The total body potassium reflects the body cell mass.

• The body surface area reflects extracellular fluid volume.

For a male:

total body potassium content in mEq =

= 39.2 * ((body weight in kilograms)^1.09)

If these equations are combined:

lean body mass in kilograms =

= (0.28224 * ((body weight)^1.09)) + (6.04 * (body surface area))
