Bird et al developed an equation for predicting extracellular fluid volume (ECFV) based on the patient's height and weight. This can be applied to both children and adults. The authors are from Addenbrooke's Hospital (Cambridge), Harley Clinic and Middlesex Hospital (London).

(1) height in centimeters

(2) weight in kilograms

extracellular fluid volume in liters =

= (0.02154) * ((weight in kg)^(0.6469)) * ((height in cm)^(0.7236))
