Description

The capacity of the urinary bladder varies with age in infants and children. Hjalmas reported an equation for estimating bladder volume by age for infants and children.

Patient selection: infant and child

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) maximum voided volume in mL

estimate for normal urinary bladder volume in mL =

= 30 * ((age in years) + 1)

normal maximum urinary flow during micturition in mL per second =

= SQRT(voided volume in mL)

maximum voided volume to estimated bladder volume ratio =

= (maximum voided volume) / (estimated bladder volume)

Interpretation:

• The maximum voided volume is small if the ratio for MVV to bladder volume for age is < 65%.

Limitations:

• Urodynamic data is unreliable if the child is tense and apprehensive.
