Eosinophilic Esophageal Myositis (EoEM) is one of the eosinophilic esophageal disorders that is distinct from eosinophilic esophagitis.
Clinical features:
(1) chest pain
(2) dysphagia with food impaction
(3) luminal compression on endoscopy
(4) abnormal manometry
(5) jackhammer or nutcracker esophagus
Laboratory findings:
(1) elevated serum IgE concentration
Biopsies or FNA aspirates show:
(1) no or few eosinophils in the esophageal mucosa
(2) increased eosinophils in the muscularis propria
The diagnosis requires exclusion of other causes of an eosinophilic infiltrate such as parasitic infection.
