Description

An automatic garage door that closes on a small child can result in injury or death.


Injury can occur if:

(1) the door closes on the child and traps the child between its edge and the ground

(2) the door opens and clothing or body part gets trapped with the child pulled upward

 

Risk factors:

(1) child playing with a garage door controller

(2) absence of safety features (detection of something in path; reversal if unexpected contact)

(3) playing or moving beneath a closing door

(4) loop attached to door

(5) unattended closure (activate closure then walk or drive away)

(6) malfunction in the control system

 

Injuries may include:

(1) crush injuries

(2) head injury

(3) asphyxiation

(4) hanging (if loop in door AND door opened)

(5) laceration
