Description

Mease et al reported a score for evaluating patients for enthesitis. This index was initially defined for patients with spondyloarthritis. The authors are from multiple hospitals in Canada participating in the Spondyloarthritis Research Consortium of Canada (SPARCC).


Enthesitis refers to inflammation of the muscular or tendinous attachment to bone.

 

Sites:

(1) lateral epicondyle, left

(2) lateral epicondyle, right

(3) medial epicondyle, left

(4) medial epicondyle, right

(5) supraspinatus insertion into the greater tuberosity of the humerus, left

(6) supraspinatus insertion into the greater tuberosity of the humerus, left

(7) greater trochanter, left

(8) greater trochanter, right

(9) quadriceps insertion into the superior border of the patella, left

(10) quadriceps insertion into the superior border of the patella, right

(11) (patellar ligament insertion into lower pole of patella) OR (tibial tubercle), left

(12) (patellar ligament insertion into lower pole of patella) OR (tibial tubercle), right

(13) Achilles tendon insertion into calcaneum, left

(14) Achilles tendon insertion into calcaneum, right

(15) plantar fascia insertion into calcaneum, left

(16) plantar fascia insertion into calcaneum, right

 

Scoring was based on the absence (0) or presence (1) of tenderness on palpation.

= SUM(points for all 16 sites)

 

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 16

• The higher the score the more extensive the enthesitis.
