Description

During a flood or other natural disaster the fresh water system may become contaminated with bacteria. Certain steps can be taken to ensure sufficient potable (drinkable) water while the water supply is being restored.

number of gallons required =

= (number of people) * (daily water requirement in gallons) * (number of days involved)

where:

• The normal daily water requirement for an adult is about 1 gallon per day.

Possible water supplies:

(1) If advanced warning has been received, then bathtubs, sinks and tubs can be filled with water. These containers should be cleaned, rinsed, then wiped with a bleach solution before filling.

(2) Purchase or fill gallon jugs with water.

(3) Fill pots and pans with water.

(4) Collect rain water if this can be done without contamination from roofs or other environmental resources.

(5) Boiling or filtering water once the water supply has become contaminated.
