Parente et al used the Endoscopic Stricture Index to define an anastomotic stricture in the esophagus following esophageal atresia repair. The authors are from Sant'Orsola-Malpighi University in Bologna, Italy.
NOTE: This is similar to the Esophageal Stenotic Ratio (ESR).
Parameters:
(1) maximum luminal diameter of the upper esophagus close to the anastomosis in cm
(2) diameter of the lumen at the anastomosis in cm
endoscopic stricture index =
= ((maximum luminal diameter above the anastomosis) - (luminal diameter of the anastomosis)) / (maximum luminal diameter above the anastomosis)
Interpretation:
• A endoscopic stricture index >= 0.6 defines an anastomotic stricture.
Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve is 0.84.
• The sensitivity at the cutoff is 100% with a specificity of 80%.
• The negative predictive value is 100%.
