Lingual tonsil hypertrophy may be associated with obstructive sleep apnea or disordered breathing. Friedman et al reported a grading scheme to describe the endoscopic appearance of lingual tonsil hypertrophy in pediatric patients. Sung et al described a somewhat similar scale for adults, with correlation to imaging studies.
