Tanoue et al developed a grading scheme for the endoscopic appearance of portal hypertensive gastropathy. They used the scheme to monitor the effect of injection of sclerotherapy. The authors are from Kyushu University in Fukuoka, Japan.
Features of portal hypertension gastropathy:
(1) occurs in patients with portal hypertension
(2) can result in upper GI bleeding, which may be uncontrollable
(3) mucosal lesions are in the cardia and/or fundus
Parameters:
(1) mucosal reddening
(2) mosaic pattern (fine reticular pattern separating areas of raised edematous mucosa)
(3) fine red speckling
(4) point bleeding
